4 Earth 2 Mars is developing CATs&DOG®—a modular, reconfigurable and serviceable construction-system framework intended to improve lifecycle efficiency under extreme resource constraints. The Moon offers a demanding design context and, over time, a potential environment for validating knowledge and construction principles that may also create value on Earth.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE CHALLENGE

Building on the Moon is not a single-structure problem.

Lunar infrastructure will develop in phases. Missions, crews and operational needs will change, while transport capacity, materials, tools and maintenance opportunities remain constrained.

Designing every shelter, platform or protective structure as a separate solution risks multiplying components, interfaces and logistics.

What is needed is a construction-system approach—one that considers assembly, inspection, repair, reconfiguration, reuse and future expansion from the beginning.

How can a limited construction system support many forms and functions over time?

CATs&DOG® is a geometry-driven construction-system framework being developed around self-supporting folded and triangulated forms created from a limited family of repeatable modules.

CATs&DOG® is not simply parametric design, an origami structure or another geodesic dome. It draws on these methods and precedents, but its proposed innovation lies in integrating self-supporting geometry, a limited module family, standardised interfaces, and reconfiguration, inspection, repair, disassembly and reuse within one lifecycle system.

Rather than prescribing one fixed dome or habitat, the same underlying system is intended to support different forms, functions and phases of lunar infrastructure. As requirements change, assemblies could be adapted and serviced instead of discarded and replaced—reducing component variety while enabling phased growth.

4 Earth 2 Mars is built on the premise that designing for extreme lunar constraints can sharpen how we design construction systems for Earth.

On the Moon, every kilogram, component, interface, assembly step and maintenance action matters. These constraints encourage fewer component types, standardised connections, adaptability, serviceability, resource efficiency and planning across the complete lifecycle.

The exchange should work in both directions. Earth’s construction sector can contribute manufacturing scale, material knowledge, supply chains and real-world deployment. Lunar infrastructure provides a demanding design context—and, over time, a potential validation environment—for new system-level approaches.

The aim is not to bring lunar buildings back to Earth. It is to bring back better ways of thinking about construction systems.

Technology alone will not create sustainable lunar infrastructure—or translate its lessons into meaningful value on Earth. Progress requires long-term collaboration between sectors and people who do not usually engage early enough.

The Lunar Lotus Family™ is an initiative of 4 Earth 2 Mars created to connect space, construction, research, corporate innovation, family businesses, investors and other committed partners around a shared Moon-to-Earth journey.

CATs&DOG® provides the construction-system framework. The Lunar Lotus Family™ develops the human and collaborative network around the journey. Lunar Lotus Bloom™—a one-of-one handmade geometric sculpture—is its first physical artifact and an expression of the geometry, patience and long-term thinking behind the mission.

PROGRESS AND SUPPORT

From geometric exploration toward technical validation.

CATs&DOG® has progressed from physical folded-paper studies and registered designs to digital configurations, lunar infrastructure scenarios and discussions with space, construction, robotics and research organisations.

The framework was presented during the OHB MoonPort Workshop and Space Resources Week 2026 in Luxembourg. Its development has received financial, technical, legal and in-kind support from organisations including Climate-KIC, Autodesk Foundation through its Technology Impact Program, Rabobank Impact Fund, RVO and the EUIPO SME Fund.

CATs&DOG® remains an early-stage construction-system framework. The next objective is to select one focused lunar infrastructure use case, translate its operational needs into measurable engineering requirements, and then develop representative components and assemblies for comparative laboratory testing.

CATs&DOG® remains an early-stage construction-system framework. The next step is to select one focused lunar use case, translate operational needs into measurable requirements, and then engineer and test representative modules, interfaces and assemblies.

4 Earth 2 Mars is seeking mission and operational specialists, alongside organisations with expertise in structural engineering, materials, manufacturing, robotics, autonomous assembly, testing and lunar infrastructure. 

A collaborator does not need to address the entire system. A focused contribution—such as joint engineering, structural simulation, prototype fabrication, robotic handling, material testing or lifecycle assessment—could help turn one part of the framework into measurable evidence.
